Traffic bans, roads closed, and the Boston Mayor’s snow emergency declared a possible blizzard for the first big nor’easter of the season
A nor’easter is slated to pummel the Mid-Atlantic and New England with high winds, coastal flooding and up to a foot of snow in some areas starting Monday evening.
Snowfall rates are expected to pick up steadily on Tuesday, falling as quickly as 2 inches per hour across central Pennsylvania and southern New York in the morning and southern New England in the afternoon.
Some areas of central Pennsylvania and southern New England could get as much as 2 inches per hour on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
In addition to closing municipal buildings and public schools, the Boston mayor instituted a parking ban on major roads and declared a snow emergency.
With the first big snowstorm of the season imminent, the City teams are prepared to clear the roads and respond to emergencies.
“If you know of parking restrictions, check on your family and friends to make sure they’re ok, and make plans to stay in the house if the snow doesn’t stop soon,” she said.
The National Weather Service predicts that heavy, wet snow coupled with strong winds of up to 40 mph will damage trees and power lines, and continue to disrupt travel.
Moderate coastal flooding is possible on Tuesday at high tide along the Jersey Shore and in parts of New York and New England.
The storm system was heading through the Southeast and Ohio Valley. The National Weather Service predicted up to 6 inches of snow in parts of the Midwest and the Southeast.
The metro area of Oklahoma City had several inches of snow, while a small part of southwest Oklahoma received up to a foot of snow.
The new storm system, arriving Wednesday and Thursday, will bring heavy rainfall in the Pacific Northwest down into northern California. The heavy precipitation from the storm will manifest as heavy snow further inland over higher terrain, gradually making its way to the northern Rockies.
New York City Mayor Adams advised that people stay off the roads, as snow could melt and freeze through Wednesday morning, potentially creating dangerous driving conditions.
