Memphis Public Works Superintendent Doug McGowen explains the Memphis Emergency Management Agency’s broken water mains in the onset of subzero temperatures
But the end of subzero temperatures — which blasted into the U.S. on Friday — was in sight for parts of the country. The daily high temperatures in Des Moines were expected to stay above freezing starting Monday.
Memphis was the largest, but not the only, water system in Tennessee to experience problems from the unusually cold weather. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency said on Saturday night that 28 water systems have issued boil water notices.
Memphis Light, Gas and Water President and CEO Doug McGowen said in a video posted to social media on Saturday evening that he hopes to have an estimate of when pressure will be restored on Sunday afternoon.
McGowen said he expects to see more water main breaks as the ground continues to thaw, and Memphis Light, Gas and Water was repairing 10 of them on Sunday afternoon. The utility said it previously repaired 41 broken water mains and located more than 4,000 leaks at homes and businesses.
Rhodes College, in Memphis, began sending residential students home on Saturday and moving those who could not return home to hotels. The school was going to have virtual classes this week.
Sam Roth and the Mason Fire Department, a University student in Nashville, Oregon, and the National Weather Service report a multi day water outage
Sam Roth, a junior majoring in politics and philosophy, wanted to stay in a hotel and not have to boil water because he was returning home to Nashville.
He said that the faucets in his dormitory stopped working, the showers were not working, and the urinals on the floor were not functioning.
He said that the school is doing everything they can to accommodate everyone. I feel bad for the people in the city that don’t have a hotel to stay at because of the water shortage.
In Mason, the fire department warned residents to prepare for a multi day water outage. The fire officials said in the post that water crews had been working for many hours to try and fix the leaks.
Water crews were working all night and all day to repair leaks, according to a post by fire officials. If there is a need for fire hydrants, there is enough water pressure to operate them.
The National Weather Service said that the travel in Kansas and Oklahoma will be very dangerous because of the weather later Sunday. It felt like minus 20 degrees in parts of Iowa.
“With no additional replenishment of arctic air from Canada, a steady warm-up is in store for the mid-section of the country,” the weather service said.

In western New York, Buffalo Bills fans were getting ready for another home playoff game Sunday evening against the Kansas City Chiefs, with temperatures forecast around 20 degrees Fahrenheit, winds around 10 mph and a slight chance of snow showers. Hundreds of people went to help shovel the snow from the stands at Highmark Stadium for the second week in a row, making $20 an hour.
The Columbia River Gorge was forecast to remain near or below freezing through at least Sunday night because of the rain on the West Coast. Trees and power lines already coated with ice could topple if they get more, the National Weather Service warned.
“Stay safe out there over the next several days as our region tries to thaw out,” the weather service said. Chunks of falling ice will be a hazard.
There is a possibility of up to 2.5 inches (6 centimeters) in rain across the area’s foothills through Monday night.
The Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management issued an evacuation warning due to the possibility of mud and debris flows because of the heavy rain in Southern California.
In Vermont, temperatures in the single digits to low teens didn’t stop ice anglers and snowmobilers from their sport, and young ski jumpers braved the cold as they competed in northern New Hampshire. But 23 skiers and snowboarders had to be rescued in frigid temperatures on Saturday after becoming lost in the backcountry in Killington, Vermont, police said.
The Emergency Management Agency in Mississippi said that 11 people have died of causes related to cold weather since January 14.

The mayor acknowledged in an interview that the town has had some water issues in the past due to the lack of upkeep on the system.
Some restaurants and bars were using bottled water to serve customers. Some restaurants remained closed, citing the water issue, while others had a modified menu.
He said that by Wednesday he believes we will have sufficient pressure for us to take samples of the water system. Assuming good results, we think that Thursday will be the day to lift the boil water advisory.
