American Airlines and Mid-U.S. Airlines Amass Travel Waivers in Light of the National Weather Service Blast Cyclone

Key US airlines have issued travel waivers ahead of what’s forecast to be a brutal “bomb cyclone” of wintry weather in the Midwest and other regions later this week.

The important aviation hub of Chicago is forecast to be one of the cities hit the hardest, with the National Weather Service warning of the potential for a blizzard.

, headquartered in Dallas, issued a “Rocky Mountain and Midwest Winter Weather” waiver as well as a waiver for more than a dozen Northeast destinations. Click here for more on Southwest’s waivers.

Change fees and fare differences on United will be waived for modified bookings within the originally ticketed cabin and between the same cities within short rebooking windows this month.

The waiver is for travel that was booked from December 22 to December 25. More than a dozen airports come under the waiver, including Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, El Paso and Houston.

Waivers are available for travel through almost 30 airports in the Midwest as well as additional waivers for about 30 destinations in the Northeast. More details on American’s website.

For customers flying through the Northeast, including cities such as New York, Baltimore, Cleveland, Ohio, JetBlue is waiving flight change fees for those who booked before Dec. 20 and are traveling on Dec. 22 or Dec. 23.

As of Tuesday morning,, headquartered in the Seattle metro area, had issued a winter weather waiver only for flights to and from Seattle because of heavy snow. Tickets needed to have been purchased on or before December 18 for travel on December 20. Alaska Airlines has more information here.

, the discount carrier headquartered in Miramar, Florida, issued a waiver for a half dozen Midwest airports for travel between December 21 and December 23. The website has details on it.

For customers with Northeastern cities on their itineraries, the weather is expected to impact flights between Dec. 22 to Dec. 24. New flights must be rebooked and depart by Dec. 27 if the original flight was booked before Dec. 20.

A bulletin from the National Weather Service (NWS) says a “strong arctic high pressure system,” was sweeping down from Canada on Tuesday and appears poised to march toward the Great Plains, the Midwest and into the Southeast on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, bringing life-threatening blizzard conditions and cold weather systems across 17 states.

Reserving Flight Changes for Northeast and Midwest Customers Who Booked Before Dec. 19 and Excurred Between Dec. 28 to Christmas Day

American Airlines is providing flight change fee waivers for trips to and from nearly 60 airports in across the Northeast and Midwest for those who booked on or before Dec. 19 and are traveling between Dec. 22. and Dec. 24.

For Midwest customers, flights from Dec. 21 to Christmas Day are being impacted. New flights can depart no later than Dec. 28, but only for those who booked before Dec. 20.
