Early-Sunday Weather Storms and Floods in Southeast Alabama, Mississippi, and Lamar County, Texas, During a Hurricane Deluge
The threat of storms persisted overnight for certain areas across northern Alabama and middle Tennessee, which faced tornado watches and warnings early Saturday.
Coroner Mark Stiles said that it appears that three people died in a tornado. Additionally, two people were killed in Monroe County in northeastern Mississippi, coroner Alan Gurley said.
At least 50 homes in Lamar County, Texas, were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Harvey, the sheriff’s office said.
Overnight tornadoes can be particularly dangerous because they can be hard to see as they move quickly through an area, and it’s also more challenging to ensure residents are warned during those hours.
A preliminary accounting Friday evening from the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center shows nine tornadoes formed in Texas, four in Arkansas and one in Oklahoma.
Plus, more than 100,000 homes and businesses were without power across Arkansas, Louisiana, southeastern Oklahoma and eastern Texas as of early Saturday, according to Poweroutage.us.
The National Weather Service confirmed late Friday that a tornado moving 45 mph was detected over the city of Wrightsville in Pulaski County, Arkansas, just south of Little Rock.
There will be more tornadoes recorded Saturday and the intensity of each will be unknown until damage surveys are conducted by National Weather Service offices.
A sudden onset of cold weather amid unseasonably warm conditions had been forecast to create the biggest tornado threat the US has seen in more than five months.

The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security is urging people to report storm damage online in order to coordinate their response.

In Wayne, Oklahoma, a confirmed EF2 tornado knocked out power and damaged homes, outbuildings and barns early Tuesday, officials said, though no injuries were reported.
Tiyia Stringfellow was inside her apartment in Farmerville when the tornado hit. She said that the two young children and her boyfriend all survived without injury.

Blizzard conditions in the Northern and Central High Plains are expected to make travel dangerous on snow-covered roads amid 1-2 inches per hour snow rates and winds gusting at 50-60 mph, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
The “one-in-five-year storm” worked its way through parts of Nebraska Tuesday and is expected to linger in the area through the end of the week, NWS metrologist Bill Taylor said.
In South Dakota, schools in the Rapid City area closed Tuesday and will remain shuttered on Wednesday due to the snow conditions in the area, the school district said on Facebook.
The wintry weather conditions caused a closure of both east and westbound lanes of Interstate 90 from Rapid City to the Wyoming state line on Tuesday, state transportation officials said.

Cindy DeLucca Hernandez thought she could beat the storm while driving home after picking up her 16-year-old son from school. She was facing a tornado on the journey.
“We started seeing debris and we got hit a couple of times by it and that’s when I put the car in reverse,” she said. Hernandez and her son made it home safe.
“Power lines down, homes severely damaged, rooftops ripped off,” he said in a video shared online describing the scene. There is a long path of destruction on the west bank.
Iberia Medical Center “sustained a significant amount of damage,” police Capt. On Facebook, Leland Laseter made a statement. CNN inquired from the medical center.
There are reports that people are trapped in the Southport subdivision in New Iberia after two tornadoes touched down in the city.

Power was restored to medical facilities west of Fort Worth in Weatherford, Texas, where more than half the city was initially without power and many homes, businesses and the city hall were damaged, said city spokesman Blake Rexroat.
After a brief reprieve from back-to-back winter storms that have brought unseasonably cold temperatures and prompted rare blizzard warnings in parts of the state, northern California is expecting another round of snow beginning Saturday.

A woman died in a weather-related incident in Placer County, according to the sheriff’s office. She did not share the circumstances of the death, though where the incident occurred saw heavy snow and temperatures around freezing on Tuesday, CNN meteorologists said.
A number of structure fires in San Bernardino County appear to be storm-related, the county fire department told CNN. The department said the number of fires is “atypical” but did not provide an exact number.
According to Fire Chief Dan Munsey, there were several house fires due to gas leaks. Some of them are located in areas with unpassable roads. Firefighters are often called to respond to fires in homes with snowcats, and often they need to dig hydrants out of the snow to put out the fire.
Residents of Crestline have become very worried about access to supplies due to the store’s collapse, as their only local grocery store closed because of the heavy snow, according to CNN.
The sheriff of San Bernardino County said that rescuers are given ready to eat meals to give to those who can’t get food. First responders will be setting up distribution points and a convoy with food and other supplies will be escort up the mountain to replenish supermarkets.

There are downed trees and storm debris. Homes and buildings were nearly leveled, with household appliances, furniture and clothes lying where the walls or roofs of homes once stood, videos from the scene show.
The same “large and destructive” tornado was also confirmed near the community of Coila, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a tornado emergency – the most dangerous type of tornado warning – in Rolling Fork, Silver City and nearby Anguilla.
There have been at least 11 tornado reports across Mississippi and Alabama over the last 24 hours, according to the Storm Prediction Center. The storm that hit Rolling Fork, Silver City and Winona in Mississippi is included in these reports.
Gov. Tate Reeves has said that the state has activated its medical support efforts as a response to the desolation in Mississippi.

The twister went northeast and destroyed several towns outside of Silver City. The severe weather also produced golf ball-size hail.
